In September 2022 an EU regulation on tropanic alkaloids (TA) in foodstuffs has gone into force. Teff is not mentioned in this regulation but all EU Health Authorities consider that this regulation affects teff as well. In fact teff is the cereal that was most recalled due to this regulation on TA in the past year. The TA contamination is by a weed called Datura stramonium that grows in all teff fields worldwide including Africa, USA and Europe. Chemical or biological control is possible but never 100%. For this reason we have invested in post harvest cleaning possibilities and we are still investing more as we speak. The harvest of the new crop will start in August and we expect that we will remain far under the norm suggested by the FAO / WHO Codex Alimentarius of 90 ppb. The EU norm of 5 ppb is unrealistic low according to us and there are no laboratories that can guarantee these low measurements. They claim 50% uncertainty which makes the supply of teff in the EU very risky for us for the time being.
