What are nutraceuticals?

Nutraceuticals are separated from processed foods such as plant products, dietary supplements (nutrients), special meals, grains, soups, and beverages. Nutraceuticals is a general term used to describe any food-derived product with additional health benefits beyond the basic nutritional value found in the food. Nutraceuticals can be considered as nonspecific biological therapy used to promote general well-being, control symptoms and prevent malignant processes.

Health benefits of nutraceuticals

There is a wide range of health benefits of nutraceuticals in food. New uses are discovered on a daily basis. From physiological health to psychological health, nutraceuticals have the potential to “treat” a wide range of diseases and conditions. Some of the expected benefits: boost energy, improve overall health, improve eye health, treat inflammation and relieve anxiety, prevent chronic diseases, support and regulate bodily functions and increase life expectancy.

Types of nutraceuticals

Types of nutraceuticals include a wide variety of foods such as prebiotics, probiotics, fibre, fatty acids (polyunsaturated), antioxidants, spices, herbs, nutrients and dietary supplements. Nutraceuticals are found in many food ingredients in different concentrations and will help health food manufacturers to produce niche food products addressing core health management issues like obesity, diabetes and cardio-vascular conditions.

Nutraceutical supplements

A nutraceutical supplement is a manufactured product intended to supplement a person’s diet by taking a pill, capsule, tablet, powder, or liquid. A supplement may contain nutrients that are either obtained from food sources or are synthetic to increase the amount of consumption. Foods containing concentrated amounts of nutrients or other substances intended to supplement normal nutrition.

Functional foods and nutraceuticals

Functional foods have a component added or removed to improve the health value of that product. For example: Lower cholesterol products, such as margarine, yoghurt and milk products with added plant substances. The term nutraceuticals is often used for products that contain so-called bioactive ingredients and which therefore have positive on health.
